Sustainability:

LCP is committed to sustainable manufacturing. We maintain an extensive and comprehensive program to recycle our waste paper, corrugated cardboard, metal plates and un-used inks.

On the printed projects we produce each year, nearly all using inks from our innovative in-house ink supplier. We are one of the first printers to use process color inks formulated without petroleum solvents. With few exceptions, over 80% of our inks are formulated using 100% vegetable oils; the remaining 20% use energy curable chemistry. This means that our printing inks, conventional and UV emit zero VOC’s (volatile organic compounds). Our ink program employs a unique software application which analyzes the ink’s formulation and calculates the proportion of base colors that should be added to create a new color for a new project. We are able to utilize 100 percent of our ink overages by this process.

LCP has instituted company-wide recycling. This not only includes office recycling, but we have also moved this initiative onto our manufacturing materials as well. LCP has partnered with Waste Management’s Recycle America to evaluate plant-wide materials that we send to recycle facilities, keeping them out of our solid waste stream and reducing our impact in landfills.

The principle of lithography requires the precise balance of two elements, ink and water. The ink transfers to the sheet while the water along with its chemistry continually returns to the printing plate throughout the process. LCP recognizes the importance of not wasting this precious resource and has built custom multi-station filter systems that are installed on all of our large format machines. These filter systems not only preserve the purity of the water used in our process but also reduced our replenishing schedules up to 65%, saving over 9000 gallons of water annually.

LCP partners with our local energy company by providing Renewable Energy Certificates (REC’S) to offset all emissions associated with the production of any product. When requested to provide REC’s we gladly perform a comprehensive energy analysis through all stages of production, calculating emissions from electricity use to carbon emissions from transit of the products. We purchase the REC’s to cover the energy used to produce each job, the proceeds of which go toward wind power research, nurturing the development of alternative power resources for the future. Green-e, the nation’s leading independent certification and verification program for renewable energy products, certifies that all REC’s purchased meet the strict environmental and consumer protection standards.

LCP partners with HAZCHEM Environmental Corporation for our Waste to Energy Program. LCP utilizes 2 distinct waste streams with our Non-Hazardous Waste. The first waste stream is our Waste to Ortek; this consists of used machine lube oil along with non-hazardous used fountain solution. Ortek is a licensed waste water treatment facility that through the process of treatment eliminates any suspended solids enabling discharge of clean waters into the Metropolitan Sanitary District and landfilling as municipal waste any collected solids.

The second waste stream is our Waste to Tradebe; this consists of used coatings, used cleaning solutions and used ink. Tradebe adheres to the Responsible Recycling Hierarchy. Tredebe sends the processed waste products to permitted RCRA/BIF cement kilns located across the country, or to Norlite Corporation, their subsidiary located in Cohoes, NY. All cement kilns serviced by Tradebe meet the Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) combustion standards. The combustion of organic hazardous wastes at high temperatures in cement kilns is the Best Demonstrated Available Technology (BDAT) for treating high BTU hazardous or non-hazardous wastes. Tradebe’s subsidiary, Norlite Corporation, operates two high temperature rotary kilns that use recycled fuels and other recoverable products to produce a lightweight aggregate that is used in bridges, buildings, specialized fill, and growing media for green roofs. Norlite achieves 99.9995% destruction removal efficiency on the most difficult to incinerate organic materials. Processes are in place at Norlite to ensure the integrity of the waste storage tanks and kiln system. Operating conditions are constantly monitored to ensure that fuel is burned completely. In addition, emissions are carefully monitored, controlled and treated to prevent air pollution. Norlite sets the standard found in the new hazardous waste combustor MACT regulations for lightweight aggregate kilns.
